Chemical name of the compound: 2-Benzofuran-1,3-dion
Synonyms: Isobenzofuran-1,3-dion, Benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride, PA.
Chemical and physical properties: Colorless solid appearing as crystal needles. It dissolves poorly in water, ethanol and ethers, while being soluble in esters and ketons. Exposure to moisture results in hydrolysis to phthalic acid.
Application: Plasticizers (phthalic esters), also fillers and dyers. May be used to produce phenolphtalein through condensation with phenol. May be use to synthesise anthraquinone and its derivatites.
Health safety: Corrodive. Harmful to air passages. Avoid skin contact and swallowing.
