Chemical and physical properties: Solid or liquid (depends on the molecular mass), biodegradable, hygroscopic, usually colorless. Water miscible, ethanol soluble.

Application: Solvent, emulsifier, agent increasing viscosity of liquid cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Used in polyurethane production and as a preservative (for wooden antiques).
